In April 2015, a stacked BJJ fight card landed in front of UK Jiu Jitsu fans: the very first Super 15 Submission Only Invitational.
Fifteen matches, no points, no judges, just finishes — across black, brown, purple, and blue belt divisions, gi and no-gi, ultra-heavy down to featherweight. Names like Remco Pardoel, Valmyr Neto, Bradley Hill, Jamie Hughes, Mark Tucker, Sergio Lourenco, and a wave of rising UK and European grapplers all signed up to try and tap each other on the same night.
A British bet on submission-only Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
From 2026, the format looks like the obvious move. In 2015 it wasn't. Points and advantages still ruled most of the calendar outside ADCC, and a card built entirely around finishes — fifteen of them, mixing black belts with brown, purple, and blue — was a genuine bet on what BJJ fans actually wanted to watch.
What stands out a decade later is how seriously the organisers took the under-card. They didn't lean only on the headline black belts. Brown belt middleweight finals, a women's blue belt match, a purple belt featherweight scrap — all on the same card, all in twenty-minute submission-only sets. That mix is now the template every UK promotion runs.
Where the format went next
Polaris built a long run out of exactly this idea. ADCC is still the gold standard of grappling. Who's Number One has given the best black belts in the world a steady stage, and the Ruotolo brothers, Mikey Musumeci, Ffion Davies, and Gordon Ryan are headlining cards built on the same submission-only DNA. Closer to home, sub-only scrap nights run in BJJ academies up and down the UK every month, broadcast on YouTube and Instagram instead of late-night Eurosport.
The Super 15 card was a snapshot of UK Jiu Jitsu in 2015 — a roster of names some fans still followed, others were just learning. But it was also a glimpse of where this whole side of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was heading.
