Renzo Gracie's Plastic Bag Choke: A BJJ Breakdown
Renzo Gracie has spent decades proving a point that cuts to the heart of BJJ: a proper choke doesn't care what material is doing the choking. When we first ran this back in June 2017, the whole…
Renzo Gracie's plastic bag choke makes one point land hard in BJJ: a proper choke doesn't care what material does the work. Hand him a grocery bag instead of a gi lapel and the finish still comes, because the bag was never the point. Renzo was.

What the Choke Really Does
Beginners learn the cross collar choke as a fabric problem: grab this lapel, grab that lapel, pull. That is only half the picture. A blood choke works because the bones of your forearm and wrist drive into the sides of the neck, compressing the carotid arteries and cutting blood to the brain. The gi lapel is just a connector that gives you a fixed, non-slipping grip. Swap it for a plastic bag, a belt, or a rolled towel, and the mechanic stays identical. The choke comes from your structure. The cloth only makes it convenient.
Why It Matters No-Gi
Skeptics say collar chokes fail in a real fight because there is no collar to grab. They are asking the wrong question. A rear naked choke carries no gi at all and finishes the same way: bone against the neck, arteries pinched, held until the tap. Modern no-gi grappling runs on the same principle Renzo showed with a shopping bag. Same choke, different clothes.
It matters for self-defense too. If a hood, jacket zip, or backpack strap ends up around a neck in a scramble, the rule holds. The choke hunts bone pressure on the arteries.
How to Drill It
Leave the plastic bag out of training. A bag over an airway is a suffocation risk and teaches you nothing about the blood choke. Use a belt or rolled towel instead. Loop it the way you would finish a cross collar choke, feel where your wrist bones sit against the neck, and notice the choke is complete the moment your structure is right, long before you pull tight. Chase the position and the bone placement first. Whatever fabric you have will do its job once you are there.
Learn the structure first. Once you see where the pressure comes from, every choke in Jiu Jitsu starts to look like one idea instead of a hundred.
See you on the mats.
