Lyubo Kumbarov's High-Percentage Single Leg for BJJ

When we first ran Lyubo Kumbarov's single leg takedown breakdown in July 2017, it went out as little more than a title and a clip — proof that in BJJ and wrestling circles, Kumbarov's name did…

Jiu Jitsu Style

Lyubo Kumbarov's single leg is one of the highest-percentage takedowns you can add to a BJJ game, and it comes from a serious wrestling pedigree. A multiple-time Bulgarian national champion out of the CSKA sports school, Kumbarov became lead wrestling coach at Roger Gracie Academy in London, where Roger himself has called him one of the best wrestlers he has ever learned from. Standup is the weak link in most Jiu Jitsu games, and this is the technique that fixes it.

The Single Leg, Broken Down

The sequence follows the blueprint wrestling coaches have refined for a century, adapted for an opponent who fights for grips as much as they sprawl.

Change levels without telegraphing it. Drop smoothly, no big wind-up, so your partner cannot read the shot coming.

Penetrate deep. Get your head outside the hip, not in front of it. Head in front invites a guillotine and a stuffed shot.

Secure the leg high, near the knee. Lock it tight so there is no gap for them to hop free or counter with a whizzer.

Finish through the hip. Drive their weight off their base rather than holding a leg and hoping. A single leg that stalls turns into a scramble, and scrambles are where standup games quietly fall apart.

Why It Belongs in Your Game

Guard-pulling used to be the default opener, and rulesets have moved against it. ADCC and most no-gi super-fights reward the grappler who finishes a takedown rather than concedes position by sitting down. A clean single leg is one of the most efficient ways to score without a lifetime of wrestling behind you.

Drilling It

Change levels, penetrate deep, secure high, finish through the hip. Drill that chain until it runs on its own. The moment you need it against a resisting opponent is not the moment to be thinking about foot position.

See you on the mats.
